Today
Psalm 118:24
“This is the day which the LORD has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
24 hours, 1440 minutes. It is called “Today.” In a 24 hour period, if you are an adult of average weight, here is what you accomplish: Your heart beats 103,689 times, your blood travels 168,000 miles, you breathe 23,040 times, you inhale 438 cubic feet of air, you eat 3.25 pounds of food, you rink 2.9 quarts of liquids, you speak 4800 words, including some unnecessary ones, you move 750 muscles, and you exercise 7,000,000 brain cells.
Today is a word filled with hope, possibilities, and world-changing potential. Wrapped up in that word is life and even eternity. You will never get more of today, but it’s what you do with today that makes all the difference. Everything can change, today.
In Psalm 118:24 we learn a lot about today. This is the Psalm the Jews sang at Passover. It is the Psalm Jesus sang before He was crucified. On His way to Calvary, Jesus sang this Psalm. Notice a few truths about “today.”
I TODAY IS A PRESENT DAY.
“This IS…the day.” Focusing on the past brings you worry. Looking just to the future can bring you fear. It is seizing the moment called now, this present moment. You can’t go back in time or go forward in time. You have today.
II TODAY IS A PARTICULAR DAY
“This is THE day.” Today is like no other day you have ever lived. It has never been or never going to be this day again. Today is unique. Think about those significant days in your life:
The Day You Were Born
It was no accident. God planned it. You celebrate or dread it each year. You were born for a purpose.
The Day You Were Married
That’s a significant day that changed your life.
The Day Your Child was Born.
This was a significant day when your life changed.
The Day you Will Die.
There is a date on heaven’s calendar that marks the last day on planet earth. It’s a day your loved one’s will never forget.
III TODAY IS A PURPOSEFUL DAY
“This is the day which the Lord has made…” God made today. Whatever God wants to do in the world today, you are a part of it. Since God put this day together, we are to rejoice and be glad in it because God is in control of it.
IV TODAY IS A PRESENTED DAY
God presents us today, but we have to decide our attitude. Notice the words, “Let us…” Let suggests a choice. Every day you place the day in God’s hands. You ask the Lord for wisdom to make right decisions.
V TODAY IS A POSITIVE DAY
“Let us rejoice and be glad in it.”
The Psalmist isn’t rejoicing in the day, he was rejoicing in the Lord Who made the day and will work in that day. Joy is the by-product of being in line with God’s will. This is choosing to rejoice in the Lord. Consider doing the following every day:
Today I’m going to Pray.
Today I’m going to open my Bible and Read God’s Word.
Today I’m going to ask the Holy Spirit to fill me, control me.
Today I’m going to intentionally look for God everywhere I go.
Today I’m going to trust what God said and not how I feel.
Today I’m going to pray for an opportunity to share my testimony.
Trust God that today, God has something unique for you to accomplish.
